Medicaid is a public health insurance program that helps people with low income pay for medical costs. It's the primary source of long-term care in the United States and covers more than 1 in 5 Americans. Medicaid can help people stay healthy, work, care for their families, and pay their bills.
NJ FamilyCare/Medicaid provides health care coverage for adults age (19-64) who live in New Jersey and who are either U.S. Citizens or qualified immigrants. For an adult to qualify for NJ FamilyCare, the total family income must be at or below 138% of the Federal Poverty Level.
New Jersey residents who have both Medicare and Medicaid, known as “dual eligibles", can enroll in a Dual Eligible Special Needs Plan.
For most services, you won't pay anything, or you'll have just a small copayment at the time of your visit. Most often, you show your Medicaid coverage card, and the state pays the full cost of your care to your doctor directly. Some states, under a federal waiver, charge a monthly premium for certain eligibility categories.
